You may not be aware that March is actually National Bed Month. That's right, there is a month long nationwide awareness campaign focusing entirely on the place where we get our nightly rest! So just what is National Bed Month about, and how can you get involved?

What is National Bed Month?

A campaign that spans the entirety of March, National Bed Month is an attempt by The Sleep Council to highlight how important it is to get a good night's sleep, and how a good bed is essential to achieving this.

The Sleep Council is an educational division of the National Bed Federation, which is the trade association for bed manufacturers in the UK. Having started the National Bed Month campaign in 1990, The Sleep Council continues to offer advice on bed selection and sleeping tips, and this dedicated awareness programme takes place every March.

Sleep problems affect many of us every night, and this can be a frustrating experience when it stops us from getting as much rest as we need. There are any number of reasons why somebody may suffer from sleeping problems, and whilst some are unavoidable, there are some that can be overcome by making simple changes to your bedroom and your evening routine.onal Bed Month?

Lack of Sleep

We've all been there; twisting and turning at night and gradually getting more infuriated as you fail to nod off, or staggering into work late struggling to keep your eyes open after another night of fitful sleep.

If you suffer from sleeping problems or have a lack of sleep, you may feel tired during the days. You might also find yourself feeling angry or with low mood, and your immune system can become weakened which increases your risk of falling ill.

It's certainly not pleasant when you don't get enough sleep.

Overcoming Sleep Problems

While some sleeping problems and issues may be medical related, others can be put simply down to lifestyle and your surroundings. In order to get a better night, try:

  • Relaxing your mind by reading a book instead of watching the TV before bed.
  • Having a warm bath to relax the muscles.
  • Avoiding tea, coffee and other sources of caffeine before you sleep.
  • Not eating too close to bedtime, as this stimulates the digestive system and can keep you awake.
  • Investing in a new bed or mattress.

Finding the Perfect Bed

When searching for a solution to their sleep problems, many people overlook the simplest answer of all; their bed! And yet it seems so obvious. Think about it – we are advised to get around 8 hours of sleep a night. That's a third of a day, so this means we spend about a third of our entire lives in bed. So choosing the correct bed is one of the most important things you can do!

It's important that you find a bed that is comfortable, whilst also offering sufficient support to your spine and back. Make sure you choose a bed that is suitable for your height and weight. Also try to get a bed of a decent size, particularly if you share it with someone else. This way, there is less chance of being disturbed and woken by a sleeping partner.

During National Bed Month this March, think about your bedtime habits and experiences. Is your bed stopping you from getting a good night's rest? Browse our range to find your dream bed.
